What a technical SEO audit checks, and why each part matters

The seven areas a proper audit covers, what goes wrong in each, and how to decide what to fix first.

Good content cannot rank if search engines struggle to find, read or trust your pages. A technical SEO audit looks under the bonnet of your website for the problems that quietly hold it back, then ranks them so the most valuable fixes happen first.

The seven areas an audit covers

  • Crawling and indexing. Can Google reach every page that matters, and is it kept away from pages that should stay private?
  • Speed and Core Web Vitals. How quickly pages load, respond to taps and settle without jumping around.
  • Mobile usability. Readable text, tappable buttons and no sideways scrolling on a phone.
  • Site structure and internal links. Clear paths from your homepage to every important page.
  • Duplicate and thin content. Pages that compete with each other or say too little to rank.
  • Structured data. Schema markup that helps search engines understand your business, services and reviews.
  • Local signals. A consistent name, address and phone number, and a complete Google Business Profile.

Turning findings into a plan

An audit can list dozens of issues. The useful part is the order. We place every finding by its likely impact and the effort to fix it, then work from the top-left corner outwards.

Audit findings placed by impact and effort. Fix indexing errors and compress images first; plan the navigation rebuild; leave minor redirects for later. Do firstPlanQuick tidy-upsLeave for later Effort Impact Fix indexing errorsCompress images Rebuild navigationAdd schema markupMinor redirects
How we rank audit findings: high impact and low effort comes first. Example findings, for illustration.

What you should receive

  • A short summary in plain language: what is wrong, why it matters and what we recommend.
  • A ranked list of fixes, each with an owner and an estimate.
  • A baseline of your current search performance, so improvements can be measured.

How often to audit

Run a full audit before or after any redesign, and a lighter health check every few months. Websites drift: new pages, plugins and content can undo earlier work without anyone noticing.
